In the early 1950, the word “illiteracy” began to appear everywhere. What does it mean to be illiterate? How far could illiteracy mark the development of a society? Illiteracy is the state of not knowing how to read and write. By 1947 illiteracy has become an obstacle standing in the way of societies development. A large percentage of the European and American population had been illiterate at the time. Those countries fought in order to reduce the number of illiterates in their societies; they worked on creating educational centers for illiterates and motivated them by needs to achieve. However, many countries are still suffering from this problem and do not have the material abilities to solve it. Illiteracy is one of the most serious causes of their backwardness. In conclusion, illiteracy cannot have any advantages; we should all put our hands together so as to beat it.
